New year and the new resolutions come piling in, designed to solve personal issues, challenge us, enhance our learning and generally make us better people. Frequently written as a set of correctives to right a wrong or to make amends for some indulgent behaviour, they often prescribe new and punishing regimes.   The problem is that humans often rebel in the face of regulation – and most especially if we ourselves have written the rules.
